Community Civic Engagement
“Never again will Black Women be disregarded. We will have our share and parity in American politics.”
Dr. C. DeLores Tucker, Founder
National Political Congress of Black Women
Community Civic Engagement will always be a cornerstone of this organization... it is in our DNA.
A requirement for membership is being registered to vote. Needless to say, we must do more. M-RAC participates in voter registration and get out the vote drives, symposiums, and is a member of the League of Women Voters. Most recently we participated in the Black Women's Agenda's "I Matter, I Vote" symposium and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) 105th Anniversary with the culminating symposium entitled "The Vote: A Call to Action with Dr. Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham, national President, who reflected on our commemoration of the sesquicentennial of the Fifteenth Amendment and the centennial of the Nineteenth Amendment.
Legislatively, each year we review the General Assembly agenda and work with other women's groups to form coalitions to lobby for strategic bills that will improve our community and quality of life. Most recently we lobbied and participated in VAratifyERA which passed in the Virginia General Assembly making Virginia the 38th state to ratify the ERA amendment. Hitting the 38-state mark means the ERA surpasses the three-quarters of states the amendment needs to be added to the Constitution.
